A 64-year-old old man is alive and well, after nearly choking to death on a fish ball in Qingdao, Shandong Province, before his son pulled out a vacuum cleaner to dislodge the food so his father could breathe again.
The man, surnamed Wang, was eating dinner with his family at their home on Jinsong Road, when the fish ball got lodged in his throat.
Wang's family tried to get the fish ball out by using their fingers and chopsticks, but failed.
When Wang's face turned purple, Wang's son took out the vacuum cleaner in an act of desperation - replacing the regular suction nozzle with a smaller piece before putting it in Wang's mouth. After the vacuum cleaner was turned on, the fish ball was sucked out.
Wang was then taken to hospital, where doctors said that he was lucky not to have incurred any permanent injuries after suffering from a temporary lack of oxygen to the brain.
Doctors added that while the vacuum cleaner was effective in unblocking Wang's airway in this case, they also said that using it was risky and advised residents not to turn to such a method unless it is an absolute last resort.
