A surfer is in a stable condition after being bitten by a shark on the New South Wales mid-north coast last night.
The 26-year-old man was surfing at Shelly Beach near Port Macquarie about 6:00pm (AEDT) when he felt something hit his hand.
He noticed cuts on his hand and blood on his leg, but did not realise he had been bitten by a shark until he went to hospital for treatment.
The man has been treated at Port Macquarie Hospital for puncture wounds to his hand and a laceration to his leg.
The hospital says he will likely stay there for the rest of the day and an expert will be used to determine the species of shark.
The attack comes just one week after Port Macquarie teenager Zac Young was killed by a tiger shark while bodyboarding near Coffs Harbour.
A week before that, a Brisbane man was killed by a great white shark while surfing south of Perth.
