The Manta Resort on Pemba Island, Zanzibar, has unveiled a room with a unique view with the opening of Africa’s first underwater hotel room.
The floating structure, designed by Sweden’s Genberg Underwater Hotels AB, is spread over three levels, with the lowest completely submerged beneath the water. The room offers an almost 360 degree view of the ocean floor, with a double bed allowing for some chilled out fish-watching.
By night, the underwater spotlights beneath each window around the room attract squid and shyer marine life, whilst coral has already begun to grow around the structure, creating its own underwater ecosystem.
The suite’s landing deck, at sea level, has a lounge area and bathroom facility, while a ladder leads up to the roof with its own sun-lounging area.
However, sleeping with the fishes doesn’t come cheap, with prices for the suite starting from US $750 per person, per night.
